about

Hi, I’m Jess!

Jess Carter Ceramics is a one woman pottery operation based out of my garage studio in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego. I make high quality, colorful wares that are meant to elicit joy. I love how pottery is art that gets to take an active role in the users daily lives.

Originally from Illinois, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 2012. After college, I made my way to St. Petersburg, Fl where I was a Resident Artist at the Morean Center for Clay for two years. From there, I packed it up and headed west to work under Forrest Middelton as an apprentice in Petaluma, CA.

I have been in California for more than a decade now and I’m so grateful to call San Diego home. I think my art has been heavily influenced and inspired by my time in Southern California.

When I am not in the studio, I like to spend as much time outside as possible. I am an avid hiker and I like to escape to the desert or mountains to camp as often as I can. I love a long bike ride, good food and am a sucker for a good dirty gin martini. If you have questions about my work or process or life, etc., please reach out. I would love to hear from you.
